EsterCobe52 Week 28 // Low Light

December holds our very darkest days. We creep towards the shortest day of the year until Dec 20th and then slowly creep back towards light until the end of winter. These shorter days seem so few and just as last week, fleeting.

We always do fun things together as a family this time of year. Attending light display walks, holiday caroling, etc. This time of year we are busy and it is documented by me regardless of light availability. This “Low Light” topic is perfect for this week with Hanukkah starting this week and St Lucia Day on Sunday.

Photographing in candlelight can be tricky. Here are some tips on what to do to help increase your chances of getting the shot to remember and frame!

Tips on Photographing in Low Light

  • Find any light and make sure it lights your subject as much as possible.
  • Use lenses that will allow you to use a wide open aperture of 2.8 or more.
  • Push your ISO up and appreciate the grain. It tells a story.
  • Use a flash if absolutely needed, but point the flash towards the ceiling or opposite wall.
  • Turn your cell phone light or iPad light on to help add more light to your subject.
